Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is one of the tools I have worked with the longest, for more than 25 years. Over that time, I’ve learned something very clearly: herbal medicine can be incredibly effective, but only when it is prescribed with deep knowledge of both the herbs and the person’s medical context. This is especially true in cancer care, where treatment protocols are complex and herb–drug interactions matter.

At Integrative Care, herbal formulas are never pre-made, generic, or trend-driven. They are carefully constructed using a combination of:

  • Clinical Nurse Consultant experience
  • Naturopathic training
  • Oncology expertise
  • Herb–drug interaction knowledge
  • Decades of hands-on herbal prescribing

This level of integration is rare, and it’s the reason herbal medicine can be used safely and meaningfully during cancer treatment.

Why Expertise Matters

Choosing herbs during cancer treatment is highly complex. It requires:

  • Understanding chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, and surgery
  • Knowing how herbs interact with specific pathways and medications
  • Recognising when herbs should not be used
  • Supporting symptoms without interfering with treatment
  • Adjusting formulas as treatment cycles change

This is not something a patient can safely self-manage, nor should it be delegated to practitioners without oncology literacy. Your formula is built with the same clinical precision you’d expect from any other part of your healthcare.

The Science Behind Human–Plant Compatibility

Throughout human evolution, our bodies have developed natural pathways that recognise and respond to plant compounds through receptors, detoxification systems, and the microbiome. This explains why plant compounds can provide support for:

  • inflammation
  • digestion
  • sleep and nervous system regulation
  • energy and recovery
  • treatment-induced discomfort

Herbal medicine works with your physiology rather than overpowering it.

Modern Research, Ancient Origins

Many pharmaceutical drugs, including widely used chemotherapy agents, originated in plants. Paclitaxel (from the Pacific yew tree) and the vinca alkaloids (from the Madagascar periwinkle) are classic examples. These drugs are now purified pharmaceuticals, not herbs, but their origins remind us that plants contain potent, biologically active compounds that science continues to study.

Current research explores plant compounds that influence:

  • inflammation
  • immune modulation
  • gut–brain pathways
  • symptom relief
  • treatment tolerance and effectiveness

Why These Formulas Are Different

Every formula I create is:

  • fully individualised
  • based on clinical and oncology knowledge
  • adjusted as your treatment changes
  • supported by emerging research
  • made with the highest-quality herbal extracts
  • delivered to your home if needed

For many people, herbal medicine becomes one of the most supportive elements of their integrative plan, something they can feel working in a tangible, grounded way. Once people experience the benefits of herbal medicine, they often choose to continue using it as a consistent part of their care.

Supporting You, Safely

Herbal medicine at Integrative Care is not an alternative. It is not used to treat cancer.
It is a supportive therapy grounded in safety, evidence, experience, and careful clinical judgement.

With 25 years of herbal prescribing and a background in oncology-focused care, you receive formulations that are safe, targeted, and aligned with your unique needs.
